There are plenty of complaints about what’s being taught in public schools. Here’s a suggestion of something that should be taught…..Home Ec.

Modern students can unravel complex mathematical problems, but still lack the skills to put together a meal, or do anything that helps them live as independent human beings and survive in the real world.

Some contend classes once known as home economics could solve the problem. These courses haven’t gone away entirely, but their presence in schools is dwindling. In 2012 there were only 3.5 million students enrolled in home economic secondary programs, a decrease of 38 percent over a decade.

One of those advocating the course’s return is Jay Juneau. In an article he wrote for Trendings, Juneau claims the class can help youngsters get the knowledge they need to succeed when they start their own independent lives or families.

The classes could include cooking, time management, budgeting, and even shopping. Students would learn how to better use their strengths and resolve their weaknesses, and get better outcomes from their hard work.

Juneau writes: “Imagine how nice it would be if your kid would learn to keep their shopping within the appropriate budget? Such kids would also know how to make meals for themselves and for others.

Basic economics knowledge should go a long way in helping people become more independent.

After all, after school, these kids have to make important financial decisions that can affect the rest of their lives and those of the families they start.”
