A heartwarming story of simple acts of kindness and paying it forward in the most unlikely of places….a New York subway train.
The story comes from the online magazine Good.
Kay Brown took the New York subway home from work on Monday night. During her trip, the 26-year-old assistant at a hedge fund in Times Square noticed a shoeless, mentally ill homeless woman standing beside her.
Brown asked the homeless woman her shoe size, it was the same as hers.
So Brown gave her the shoes off her feet and they fit perfectly. She said the homeless woman couldn’t have been more gracious.”
But that left Brown shoeless and standing on the subway for 15 min in a pair of mis-matched socks..
But right before she got off the train a man offered her an extra pair of socks to go over top of her small thin ones. She said it was just a simple act of kindness in both cases.
Brown said it would be easy to downplay the event. She can buy another pair of shoes tomorrow. And the man who gave her the socks probably has plenty of others at home.
But considering it happened in the middle of November having a pair of shoes if you’re homeless is a big deal. And even tho she got plenty of strange looks walking home in nothing but socks, the extra pair made the trip easier.
This act of kindness wasn’t Brown’s first. She helps the nonprofit Fly for MS with its social media efforts and volunteers with organizations dedicated to feeding the homeless.
She told the Today show, “I’m really thankful to have incredible parents who have taught me to always put good out into the world.” adding “With all the stuff that’s happening in the world right now, seeing the smile on that woman’s face was the best.”
