Some people in Pennsylvania city found a unique and festive way to celebrate the season. They decorated a pothole with a Christmas tree.

The idea wasn’t only in keeping with the holiday it was a way to bring attention to the massive pothole growing in the middle of their street.

Marietta Spak and her neighbors are frustrated with the condition of their road. Not only is it an eyesore, but a safety hazard for drivers.

So one weekend, Spak took matters into her own hands and decided to plant a fake Christmas tree in the hole, hoping it would prompt city officials in Wilkes-Barre to fix it.

Spak told WNEP, “I was upstairs in the attic and I was looking for more Christmas decorations, and I came upon the tree. I thought that it would look nice in the hole,”

Other residents added more decorations throughout the week, including a Santa Claus figurine.

Gary Muchler, who’s lived in the neighborhood for more than 60 years, at first didn’t think the decoration was very funny, but soon he too got into the spirit of the season and took a photo posing next the fake tree. He sent the hilarious picture  to his wife.

Apparently, the holiday humor worked. The Wilkes-Barre Department of Public Works has since placed a metal slab over the hole and said a contractor is expected to repave the street soon.

Spak said, “We took something ugly and we made it prettier. ‘Tis the season, right?”
