A church in Maryland has come up with a unique way to get people to come to church… it’s giving away a car.

It’s hard to say if this idea falls into the category of “out of the box” thinking or a sad commentary on life in secularized America. But one house of worship in Maryland is looking to rope backsliders back in church with a free car giveaway.

That’s right. The church bought five cars to hand out at a Sunday service to “demonstrate God’s goodness and attract new members,” according to a story in The Washington Post.

Pastor Stephen Chandler of Destiny Church in Columbia, Maryland, said his congregation normally numbers about 1,100 on Sundays. When they announced the car giveaway, they brought in 2,250 people across three services. The church had so many people trying to show up, in fact, they had to add a fourth service, for which they needed to buy another car and give it away.

The church did give out the fifth car to a family in need — relevant called the charity– “a nice demonstration of that super famous part in the Bible where God thanks, all of the disciples and followers of Jesus for their unwavering faith by sending a fleet of new Ford Focuses out of the sky.”

Church promotion has definitely changed…
