Today we have the story of a young man who knows how to keep a promise….and wait until you hear what that promise was.

While many of his college peers were off partying, Stefun Darts, a 24-year-old student from Houston, was working to fulfill a promise he made to his grandparents when he was just a child.

Darts wrote to his grandparents on Facebook, “I promised God in the second grade I would pay off [your] house and help you retire, a promise I would never break.”

And while kids often forget the things they once said, Darts held this sentiment near and dear to his heart. He recently surprised his grandparents, Marilyn and Cecil Roberts with a check for $15,000 and a trip to the Bahamas.

According to KHOU, the full-time college student chose to eat microwave pizza and stay in (instead of going out with friends) to save money. He also holds down a full-time job and runs two small non-profits.

Darts wrote, “Even with this, I could never repay you for what you’ve done for me,”

“I sacrificed my teenage and early adulthood of not having fun for this moment. I couldn’t stand you going to work at night, some nights I didn’t even sleep knowing it shouldn’t be like this. To all my friends that stood by me over these last 6 years I appreciate you.”

The Roberts had been working to pay off their mortgage for over 20 years. And while they would have completed their payments in four more years, their grandson’s gift will allow them to retire earlier than expected.

Perhaps the greatest gift of all, though, is the thought that their grandson cares so much about them.

Darts Grandmother told KHOU, “I couldn’t believe it,” “To have a grandson like that is a blessing.” His grandfather chimed in: “He’s a very special kid and I just love having him in my life.”
