If you’re one of those dedicated people who carves out 30 minutes a day for exercise to keep yourself healthy, I have some disappointing news. Its not enough.

A new analysis published in the journal Circulation finds that 30 minutes a day of activity may not be good enough.

Researchers found that those following the 30-minutes-a-day guidelines issued by the American Heart Association had “modest reductions” in heart failure risk compared to those who did not work out at all.

But those who exercised twice and four times as much had “a substantial risk reduction” of 20 percent and 35 percent, respectively.

With the higher limits getting an exercise plan for your family is now even more important. Johnson and Johnson has some suggestions to help you get your family fit.

First, Stay focused on play. If you call it exercise, kids are likely to avoid it or say they’re not interested.

Second, Just dance. Dance parties are a common occurrence in many homes because they’re fun, easy to initiate and are a perfect rainy day activity.

Next,  Capitalize on competition. Kids love to compete with each other, so turn their favorite activities into a contest.

Then, Tune in to your kids’ energy levels. Look for clues that your child may have excess energy to burn – are they being especially rambunctious indoors or having trouble sitting still?

And finally, Set an example. If you let your child see you prioritize exercise and physical activity, they will be encouraged to do the same.
