A new study from the Pew Research Center found that different technologies: from cell phones to social media to even video games can help kids make new friends and maintain existing relationships. The study is a ray of hope in a research landscape that’s been largely dedicated to deriding the benefits of teen tech use.

As soon as it came into existence, technology used by teens became an issue of concern among parents and researchers alike. But some experts say such worries may be a thing of the past as people have learned to adapt to life in the Digital Age.

Studies dating all the way back to the early 2000s have looked at how social media is a venue for harassment and contributed to everything from depression to anxiety and loneliness. One report from the University of Michigan showed where social media actually can make you feel bad about yourself — the more you check Facebook, the worst you feel about your own life.

Parents need to also continue to be aware of the fact that teens who post public photos of themselves online are more likely to be contacted by strangers.

So while this new study from Pew Research might not completely invalidate the facts from the past, it could be a sign of how public attitude towards young people’s technology could be changing.
